Series: Dive Bar #1
Author: Kylie Scott
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: 19 April 2016
Blurb
The last thing Vaughan Hewson expects to find when he returns to his childhood home is a broken hearted bride in his shower, let alone the drama and chaos that comes with her.
Lydia Green doesn't know whether to burn down the church or sit and
cry in a corner. Discovering the love of your life is having an affair on your wedding day is bad enough. Finding out it's with his best man is another thing all together. She narrowly escapes tying the knot and meets Vaughan only hours later.
Vaughan is the exact opposite of the picture perfect, respected businessman she thought she'd marry. This former musician-turned-bartender is rough around the edges and unsettled. But she already tried Mr. Right and discovered he's all wrong-maybe it's time to give Mr. Right Now a chance.
After all, what's wrong with getting dirty?
Review
This is the first in a new series Dive Bar and I was so looking forward to read this.
Lydia is the runaway bride, fleeing from her wedding after she is sent some shocking evidence that her future husband is having an affair – with his best man! Her fleeing attempts land her in the bathroom of a sexy tattooed stranger where she comes face to face with his manly parts. How could things go so wrong? Haha
I must admit the first part of this book read more like chick-lit to me and I found it hard to get hooked into at first. The first few chapters were a little slow going and I was waiting for things to get going but when they did I was hooked!
Vaughan apparently first appeared in Deep (so I need to go back and remind me of that) but it made no matter as he made a swoon worthy impression on me here in this book. His ‘too cool for school’ attitude was an instant vibe I knew I was going to love him a lot. I did.
Vaughan is back in his home town after his band breaks up. Finding himself low on energy and money he needs to recuperate and make new plans for his music. What he was not expecting was the curvy beauty in a wedding dress in his bath tub displaying an amazing rack (I love that saying)
Lydia has always striven to better herself, with little or no parental guidance she clings to a belief that love and family will eventually come to her. When she thinks she had found that with Chris, she is shattered to find it was only an illusion of her dream, so when she meets the handsome (although she calls him pretty!) Vaughan she knows not to put any onus on the ‘feels’ she is getting from this man. They agree on a mutual support and to be friends. However close proximity often leads the best laid plans to crumble in the dust.
I liked Lydia even though she had random mind ramblings in the most inopportune moments, she was a believable and engaging character. I also liked she was plus sized, so nice to read about ‘normal’ in my romance books. The interactions she had with Vaughan were hilarious in some instances and hot to trot in others. Their growing relationship easily picked up and the chemistry oozed from the page.
The angst level was just pitched right and kept the reader waiting and wondering if we were going to get our HEA, after all they both wanted different things for their dreams. But then fate and life has a hand in making them both reassess what life is all about.
It was also great to see my funny, fabulous Mal make an appearance. I hope we get to see the others from Stage Dive make some cameo appearances in the next books in the series. Always nice to touch base with these guys!
Overall this was an emotional, sweet and sexy read with plenty of angst, tension and comedic interactions thrown in for good measure. As I say a bit slow to start but definitely made up for that in the rest of the read. Four and a half stars.
