 Synopsis
Falling for his best friend’s sister seemed like a good idea at the time.

Defenceman Ryan Flynn’s life and career is defined by the codes of hockey; friendship, respect, leadership and protection. A call from his best friends sister ends up with him taking her home and it’s all he can do to remember that she’s off limits. Doesn’t matter that she’s too much of temptation for a man on the edge, he promised her brother he wouldn’t go anywhere near her.

Kathryn Lecour has been in lust with hockey player Ryan Flynn since she was first laid eyes on him. The problem? Ryan is her brother’s best friend, bound by a complicated code of chivalry both on and off the ice.

Will Ryan, the hard man of the Dragons ever see her as anything more than his best friend’s little sister? And will Kat be able to tame the Dragon with ice in his heart?

What I loved the most about hockey is the friendships in teams. You’ll often have guys saying they and their families spend summers together, or they have lived together as rookies. This makes trades hard, when friends who have bonded through hockey are put on different, opposing, teams.

On the team I support we have a bromance between Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. One is a Canadian hockey superstar, the other is a very tall Russian player who is also pretty damn good.

In Dallas we have Benn and Seguin, in the Blackhawks we have Toews and Kane. They are the faces of the franchise, the ones who are interviewed, often as a *pair*, for magazines and so on.

When I wrote The Code, I wanted to see a bromance being tested. Ryan and Nicolas have been friends since forever, and not only that but Ryan made a promise to Nicolas that he would always look out for Nicolas’s sister.

When Ryan falls in love with the sister in question friendship is tested as much as love. Can he break the promise he made to the man that is his closest friend? Can he break the unwritten code of hockey, that is to always have your friend’s back?

Ryan certainly doesn’t have it easy.

Are you a sports fan? Do you have any *bromances* going on in the team you like?

Review
The first in a new series by RJ Scott writing as Rozenn Scott, The Code takes centre place in the sporting world of Hockey.

Ryan Flynn is the hard man on the ice and defenceman for the Ice Dragons. But off the ice he is hiding a secret, one he has held for over a decade. His yearning for his best friend’s sister, Kat. After making a promise all those years back, there is no way he can act on this attraction or is there?

Kat is a paramedic and has always crushed on her big brother’s best friend. After all he has been there at the most poignant times of her life and was the one to give her the first kiss she ever had. Trying to keep him at arm’s length and act as a ‘friend’ has been difficult but then when something happens and she needs his kiss again it just brings out those unfulfilled feelings they both have to the forefront. Could this be the time they act of this attraction.

This was a sweet and engaging read. The build-up was a little slow going as the romance element doesn’t really kick off until the second half of the book. Then once the chemistry was acted on, it all seemed to happen really quickly and I didn’t really get the transition from friends to lovers and how that impacted on them. However the characters of Kat and Ryan were very likable and worked well together. I just needed that extra oomph of all those years of burning attraction suddenly coming to fruition.

The storyline was quite heavy on the hockey too but I got to learn a bit of this dangerous sport. Sounds like fun! The secondary characters were also entertaining and I loved the camaraderie between the men on the team.

Overall I really enjoyed this and if the romance had come in that little bit sooner with a touch more angst and drama then this would surely have been a five star read. I would definitely recommend it though and look forward to the next book in the series. Four stars.
