Time doesn’t always heal a broken heart. Sometimes the only thing it does is fill the darkness with more shadows, more pain. Dylan Thomas has spent the past decade living in the shadows, mourning the loss of his wife, his best friend, his very reason for breathing. He long ago accepted that he would never feel again, that he was damned to a world without light, without hope. That was the day the bottle won, and he gave himself over to the darkness. Until the one night that rocked his brittle, crumbling world on its axis. She told him what they shared was simply a distraction, a way to forget for a little while. It would’ve been, except the tiny glimpse of how it feels to live again, to feel again, gives him the strength he needs to pull himself up by his boot straps. But sobriety comes one day at a time, and three years later may be three years too late. |
The final book in the Club Destiny series, Distraction can
be read as a standalone.
Sarah and Dylan have both had a past filled with loss and despair
and while Sarah hid herself away, Dylan found his coping mechanism at the
bottom of a bottle. Having once been a short term romance at high school, both
had gone down different paths and found other loves. It is the loss of their spouses that took them to separate lives. However after both their tragedies they
were brought back into the same circle but when the budding new friendship was
cut short after a misunderstanding after a passion filled joining they
separated again. However three years later it looked like fate was a knocking
on their door again.
This was a deeply emotive and thought provoking book that
dealt with two serious issues – alcoholism and mental health. It made you
consider what could happen in life and the repercussions of loss. But there was
redemption in the storyline and even though there were lots of heartache and
pain there was also lots of second chance romance and passion.
The pairing between the two was tangible and you could feel
the electricity and chemistry between Sarah and Dylan. I was so connected to
both characters and I was rooting for them to heal and find love again.
Sarah was one tough cookie who was overly harsh on herself
at the start but then she took life by the nuts and rejuvenated herself to not
be the doormat anymore. She learns to love life again and goes out for what she
wants. Dylan was one hot but vulnerable man who I just fell in love with from
the start. The way he turned his life around after over a decade of pain was
devastating. When he says that final goodbye to his wife at the grave had me in
buckets.
This was another fabulous read from Ms Edwards and one that
really pulled at the heart strings. It is sad that this is the end of the
series but one that is a definite read again to treasure. Five glorious stars.
