Review - Seducing Cinderella by Gina L Maxwell

Seducing Cinderella by Gina L Maxwell

Contemporary, Erotic, M/F

My rating 3.75 rounded up to a 4 (sex scenes pushed it!)

This book was not what I was expecting but I enjoyed it overall. It was sweet and kept me interested and the hero was totally enthralling.

However when reading the blurb and I noted he was a tough MMA fighter; I was expecting much more depth, angst, rough and toughness. What I got was sweetness and light.

Reid Andrews is at the peak of his MMA fighting career but after a disastrous injury, he is taking time out to recoup and build his powers back to his peak, ready to reclaim his title as the champ. To ensure this happens, his trainer sends him to an out of town physical therapist. Reid, although unhappy to be out of his usual training camp agrees. But then he finds out the therapist is none other than his best friend’s little sister, Lucie. Although she is not so little now and he finds she has moved on from the little cutie teenager who used to follow him around with stars in her eyes. She has since got married and divorced from a total ass-wipe who has changed her outlook on men. No more will she fall for the opposite of who she is, she will ensure her next husband is one who ticks all the right boxes. This is what Dr Dreamy is but he never looks at her as date material let alone marriage potential. Once Reid finds this out he decides to he can help Lucie by giving her seduction techniques in exchange for her giving him one on one treatment to aid his quick recovery to peak fitness.

What I liked about this book was the interaction between Reid and Lucie. The sex scenes were explicit and very raunchy. Reid was a total dream man and Lucie a woman who knew what she wanted but sometimes knowing what you think you should have and what you know you should need were playing havoc with her feelings.

I totally got where Lucie was coming from and how the rejections from the past were a major part on her inferiority complex. I loved how Reid built up her confidence and the way the romance built was sizzling.

I would have loved to have seen fight scenes in this book, with a lot more depth and darkness. For me it would have added more ambience to the book and given more oomph. Also there was no interaction with her brother, who as Reid’s best friend and in the same business, I would have expected him to come and check up on his friend, unless this is picked up in the next book.

As I say it was a little too light and fluffy for me even with the raunchy sexiness, which was well written. But overall for a debut novel, I enjoyed this read and will be reading the next in the series.

Review - Addicted to Him by Lauren Dodd

Addicted to Him - Lauren Dodd

My rating = 4 stars

m/f  YA romance (ish)

This is not your typical happy clappy romance, but there is a good ending.

Cassidy comes from an unhappy broken home. Her father left when she was young and she has hardly seen him since she was twelve (she is now eighteen). Her mother is a total bitch to her, purely because she is jealous of how her daughter is blossoming. This also leads to her step father taking an unhealthy interest in Cassidy, so much so she has changed her whole persona over the last two years, going from a vibrant and beautiful girl into a shell of her former self. She has lost weight to lose her curves and dyed her hair black to fade her into the background. However this still does not stop the unwanted attention and her fear is escalating and she therefore takes drastic action which results in her Mother sending her to live with her father and his new wife in Colorado for the summer.

It is here that Cassidy finds herself again, she cannot believe that she is wanted by her father and his wife. It becomes apparent almost from day one that they want her to stay and live with them but due to Cassidy’s insecurities she cannot let herself believe that this is true. It isn't until she meets Seth that she learns to let go and start to believe there is light at the end of the tunnel and that she can find herself again and be happy with her father and his wife. But most of all she can be happy with Seth.

The relationship with Cassidy and Seth starts innocently and builds to a deep and passionate romance. But then Seth starts to get possessive and his behaviour totally opposite to how he used to be. In the end has Cassidy exchanged one form of abuse for another and which one is the worst?

I found this story to be extremely enthralling but at the same time I didn't want to read some parts and some parts I found so frustrating. But then I had to remember this was an eighteen year old and an immature one at that. I did want her to find her happiness but I was quite shocked at some of the things Cassidy put up with. It was lovely to see her developing relationship with her father, Martin and his wife Lisa and how it illustrated bridges can be re-established and relationships prosper that were previously thought to be irrevocable.

I was quite taken aback at some of the scenes with Seth and wondered how the hell the author could turn this around as it appeared this was a total cluster feck waiting to happen. But in the end I actually liked how it ended and that this book did not follow a ‘writing-by-numbers’ premise.

Overall a wonderfully written piece, if not the usual romance path but one that was very thought provoking and delivers a strong message to not put up with abuse, no matter what form that may take.

Review - Shayla's Story by Beverly Preston

Shayla's Story by Beverly Preston

My rating = 5 Amazing Stars

This is the second book in the Matthews/Clemins family series although it can be read as a standalone, however I would suggest you read No More Wasted Time first as this will enhance the full glorious, blissful and heart wrenching experience of a read into a world where love and life are never taken for granted.

We were first introduced to Shayla in the first book – No More Wasted Time (Tess and Tommy’s story). Shayla has been working for her famous movie star uncle (Tommy) as his PA for the last ten years, ever since he took her under his wing after she escaped from her life of drink related violence at the hands of her father and the indifference of her mother. She is in a safe, if staid relationship with Mat, who is in the throes of the politics trail under the domineering steer of his mother. On paper Mat is everything that Shayla should need but his blasé behaviour towards her is secretly telling her something is missing. After a disastrous Thanksgiving with Mat and his family, she gladly welcomes an escape to her uncle’s surprising invitation to his wedding to Tess in Greece.

It is here on the private plane taking them to Greece that she meets Tess’ son John for the first time. The beautiful, protective John who she hates after he took his fists to her uncle when believing a gutter press article that Tommy was cheating on Tess. All had now been cleared up but Shayla still cannot get over the brute tactics she felt John undertook. However, after a frosty start, she gets to see first-hand how gentle and protective John is and she starts to see John as the person he really is.

Things start to hot up in Greece when the relationship starts to develop and Shayla is thrown into the passionate world that John creates for them. It is then she needs to decide – does she play it safe and go back to Mat or does she jump freely with her arms open wide into the unknown but tempting life that she knows John can offer?

Oh I absolutely loved this book! I first fell for John in the first book, loving the way he took over protecting his Mom, Tess and his sisters, JC and Tracey after their father died. To now see him in this book with Shayla, a very sexy and desirable man in his own right was breathtaking  I loved the part where they both found out about their ages. I won't spoil it by revealing but it took the book up another notch for me. I was thinking “You go for it Shayla, just do it!”  Fabulous!

The locations were another winner in this book. I could really feel I was back in Greece with the little white houses and the sea breezes wafting in the evening. But then we were transported to Christmas in Colorado and the snow. The book took you on a journey with a total spectrum of locations and atmosphere.

When reading the first book I remember wanting a little more angst and Beverly Preston did not disappoint in this book. A huge curveball was thrown right in just when you thought we were on our way to HEA land. Oh. Em. Gee. It was a ‘heart in the mouth’ moment thinking that something totally different to what I was expecting to happen.

I absolutely loved this book and was sad when it ended. A truly beautiful and amazing read.

Review - Escaping Reality (The Secret Life of Amy Bensen) by Lisa Renee Jones

Escaping Reality (The Secret Life of Amy Bensen)

My rating = A brilliant and five amazing stars!!
*ARC received via Netgalley and Julie Patra Publishing in exchange for my honest review

From the first page of this book I was hooked and there I was till dawn the following day. The intrigue, the questions, the mystery, the sex, the danger, the tattoo, the triangle, THE SEX! Oh my word I was on flippin’ tenterhooks all way through but this book was so utterly compelling it was DEVINE!

Okay I'll try...TRY to summarise what this book is about and what I thought but then that might be hard as even after finishing it I'm left with millions more questions than I had after the first chapter.

We are first introduced to Amy when she is at a party gets a call from her “handler” who tells her she needs to run again and she needs to do it now.  This throws her into a panic as only now, just now, she had thought she could finally relax again and start to make a life without looking over her shoulder all the goddam time. She’s had some serious eff'd up crap happen in her past and it has something to do with her parents but nothing is revealed except little snippets of memory scattered in between the current day happenings. So off she goes, direct to the airport where she is to collect packages and a walk on, nothing else. She can't even tell her new found BFF goodbye. It’s here at the airport she first makes eye contact with Liam Stone, *pauses to breathe and pant* the enigmatic and ultimate image of a love god if ever there was one. By some strange coincidence and due to a mix up with her ticket she finds herself upgraded to first class and sitting next to this sexy man she saw in the waiting lounge.

Neither can fight the attraction between them but Amy knows she can’t get involved with Liam; it will only put him in danger. But Liam is a man used to getting what he wants and he wants Amy. Amy cannot let him in so she puts up her walls but Liam quickly latches onto this and knows she needs to trust him so he lets her in on some of his secrets, his life. She finds out he is a reclusive billionaire, a protégé architect with his own demons to kill. When they land in Denver, Liam latches onto the strong connection they had built over the flight and quickly establishes himself into Amy’s ‘new’ life.

But for Amy this ‘new’ life just doesn't add up. Who is her new boss? Why is her new friend Meg never at work? Who is Jared and why does he keep randomly appearing when she least expects it? Why does he seem so familiar to her? What is the connection with the triangles? Why did her ‘handler’ have one tattooed on his wrist? Why does Liam have one tattooed on his stomach? (Which she finds out in a scintillating and overtly sexy way – rawr!) The questions go on and on leading you further into this compelling read.

In between all the mystery and drama, the relationship of Amy and Liam just builds and builds, each learning to let the other in. There are some seriously sexy ‘sexy times’ that are just off the scale. Liam likes to control and Amy likes to be controlled, leading to some scorching scenes.

Page after page I was continually asking question after question, suspicious of everyone and everything. This book keeps the tension building, keeps your mind pushing itself to find a conclusion but each time you think you might have sussed it, another curveball gets thrown.

This book was absolutely amazing and Lisa Renee Jones has built a spectacular storyline that you want to know but then you don't want to know what the hell happened in both their pasts and how they are now connected.

Oh and did I say about the cliffhanger? THE CLIFF HANGER?!!! Oh.Em.Gee. Nooooooooooo! Don't leave me this way. I cannot wait any longer! I have to know NOW! But wait I must and the next book, Infinite Possibilities is due in October 2013.  Is it bad to want summer to end already? A brilliant book, absolutely brilliant.

Review - Viper by Patricia A Rasey

Viper by Patricia A Rasey

Rating = 4 sizzling stars!

* ARC provided by the author in exchange my for honest review

It has been a while since I last read a paranormal book but the blurb just totally grabbed me. Well a totally hot vampire who also happens to be the president of the Sons of Sangue Motorcycle club – what’s not to grab me?

This wasn't your typical fantasy – it was so real and raw. No sparkles, no throwback to another era. No just here and now, present modern world with an undercurrent of danger of a secret never to be revealed. Or will it?

This book totally rekindled my paranormal fires! From the blurb to the cover, it was a fast buy in from the first page.

Kane ‘Viper’ Tepes and his twin Kaleb ‘Hawk’ Tepes run the Sons of Sangue Motorcycle Club and have a good relationship with the town’s Sheriff’s office. That is until beautiful blonde, blue eyed women start turning up dead and all link to Viper and his sexual persuasions and contacts. This brings Detective Cara Brahnam back into his life.

It had been ten years since he last saw this gorgeous woman who has never left his thoughts, not since that first night he turned and saw her running into the night after she sees him taking his fangs to a woman amongst other ‘entertainment’. He should have run after her and wiped her memory, but for some reason he wants Cara to remember who and what he is.

Cara had never forgotten that night either but refuses to believe what she saw. How can vampires exist? No it was a trick of the light or some sick kink he was into, after all this was the same weird stuff her friend Suzi was into and the reason she never spoke to her again and left town. However she never forgot that strong sexual pull she had towards Kane and now all these years later the feelings are just as strong, if not more.

So here Cara finds herself back in Pleasant, running away from another cluster eff she found herself in with her ex (and what a nasty piece of work he was). As lead detective she is back up close and personal to the man she ran away from ten years ago, who is now number one suspect in a murder investigation.

I love how cool Cara is and I actually liked her. She took everything at face value and tried to rationalise each situation she comes across, especially Kane being a vampire! One thing she can't deny is the attraction they have for each other. I was in for a treat with the chemistry dripping off the kindle. Kane was a total badass alpha hottie. He knew what he wanted and that he was going to get it and he wanted Cara like no other. Not even when she is accusing him of murder! But as the investigation heats up (as does the relationship with Cara and Kane) it’s seems all is not as straight cut as they both thought. Evil forces from Kane’s past are thrown into the mix and he finds himself needing to protect Cara which puts them both in closer and closer contact.

I adored Kane and the whole MC brotherhood. The secondary characters just added further to the mix of this world the author has created. Trying to sum it up in one sentence is hard but I suppose it is a cross between Vampire Diaries for grownups and Sons of Anarchy. Totally kick ass, absorbing and darn sexy! Roll on to the next book – I hope it’s Kaleb – I can't wait!

Excerpt

A fever of hot molten lava raced across her skin, instantly turning her hands damp. Shayla nervously waved her wet hands in the air, watching the shadow pace outside her door in the lit hallway. Flutters danced through her tummy. She tiptoed to the door and silently rested her hand on the handle.

The pacing came to a halt.

A smile curled on the corner of her mouth. John could see her shadow beneath to door as well. With only a solid piece of wood between them, her composure fractured, sending tingling sensations to the tender area between her thighs.

Her heartbeat drummed so erratically in her ears she could barely hear the soft tapping on the door. Shayla eased the door open a few inches, trying to conceal her smile. "Hey," she said softly. "What’s up?"

John lifted a brow, amused by the double meaning of her words. His arm flexed a little, pushing the door open a bit further, stretching the thin t-shirt snug over the hard lines of his torso. His gaze wandered keenly from her toes to her face with utter slowness, settling on her eyes. He squinted ambiguously. "I want to ask you something."

Engrossed in the fresh scent of his skin and damp hair at his nape, she gripped the handle for support. "Okay," she panted breathlessly.

John stepped across the threshold, clasping her hands in his. "Stay with me?"

Her thoughts scattered and she dropped her gaze to the floor.

He waited until Shayla could bring herself to look at him. "Don’t act like you don’t feel the connection between us."

"I do, but—"

"Come with me." John took a step back, gently tugging on her hands, beckoning her toward the hallway.

In a daze, she took a quick scan of her cami and panties barely covering her backside. Shayla reached for a white silk cover-up hanging on the back of the door.

John snatched the robe from her hands and tossed it onto her bed, shaking his head. "Please don’t put that on. You look absolutely breathtaking."

His compliment made her heart swoon. She poked her head into the hall. "But—"

He pulled her into his arms and Shayla squealed in surprise at his powerful embrace. The rough texture of one of his palms traveling down the small of her back and cupping her exposed cheek made her gasp. His smile widened into a slow burn of desire, igniting a fire in her belly. Every fine hair on her body stood at attention.

She swallowed hard. "I can’t make any promises."

Taking her hand, John led her down the hall to his room.

Standing at his door, John caressed her arms, pausing before turning the handle. "I understand your situation, Shay, but if I don’t ask, I will never forgive myself."

"Ask?" The word caught on her dry lips.

With a wave of his arm, he invited her into his dimly lit room. The lights were dim and a candle flickered in the darkness next to a bottle of wine and two glasses. He shut the door behind them.

"I’m not asking for promises." John spoke against her scalp, his solid chest pressed against her shoulder. As he brushed the hair from her shoulder, his hot breath tickled her ear. "I’m asking for a weekend."

No Apologies by Tibby Armstrong

read August 2012

My rating = 4 stars

This is my second read of this book so that alone should tell you that I recommend it. Yes definitely recommend. I just loved the characters Aaron and Greg and the whole concept of this book really hooked me. It was unlike anything I had read before. It was like getting two books in one. There was also some slight D/s action. A bonus!

The story centres on the relationship of Aaron and Greg in both the present day and a decade earlier. The uniqueness of this book was the history of the pair was portrayed by a film of which the screenplay had been penned by Greg. This was with a slight twist as the situation of the film was not as true to life as first thought by the reader. It tells the tale of how both met at a military school, their “coming of age” and their subsequent relationship. I loved how the story unfolds with the highs and lows of the life they have shared. It was fabulous how the present day is at a glitzy Hollywood premier of the film and that after all they have gained there is still elements missing from their lives.

When I first read this book I had a slight “tsk” moment at the end as I felt it needed more on the “now” relationship of the two MCs. I was not aware of the sequels when first reading, so to go back and re-read after reading Acting Out and Full Disclosure gave me that understanding of the “now” Aaron and Greg. It was even better second time around!

This was my first read of any of Tibby Armstrong books but after this one I became a fan. Fo’sure!

So here we have come full circle in the epic series that has been the love story of Greg and Aaron. The blurb does say this can be read as a stand-alone but to get the full picture (and pleasure!) I would definitely first read No Apologies (the film Greg wrote about their early relationship) and Acting Out (the filming and subsequent relationship of the actors Kit and Jeremy).

This book picks up after the film release and the Academy Awards (swoons again remembering that scene). Greg and Aaron are now living together and preparing for their impending marriage (Yes! Yes!). Greg has fully embraced who he is after he “came out” at the premiere. However Aaron feels that Greg is holding back on certain things and when they receive an invitation for Greg to present at a ceremony at their old school, he thinks that by going back to where it all started will resolve old hurts once and for all. Oh blooming heck – little did they know what would happen there would have the most impact on their future together.

Tibby Armstrong has again delivered a page turner and I would have to say this is the best book of the series. What happens at the school had my heart in my mouth and I was dreading what Tibby had done, that this was going to go in an altogether different way than I wanted it to. Yes I was shouting at my kindle “Don’t you dare Tibby!” “You better not make that happen” (yes I am loco when involved in a book) I won’t go into detail as I hate reviews that give spoilers but will say one little “huh?” did happen for me….the “recovery” seemed a bit of a miracle and came too quick. I’d have maybe drawn another chapter out on that. But then that’s me wanting MOAR! MOAR!

I love Tibby’s unique storytelling and I just want to devour everything she has written. I absolutely adored this series and especially this book. The ending was…….oh the ending! In a word it was…Devine. Simply DEVINE! I hope this isn’t the last of Greg and Aaron but if not I can always re-read. Yes I will definitely read this again….and again…and again. Wonderful.

The subject matter of this book made me a little hesitant at first but I like to push my boundaries now and again to discover new genres, sub genres and kinks! Whoa – I was pushed with this book but I really liked it! Abso-frackin-lutely

It was a compelling read and one that sucker punched right from the start with the hook-up of Bran “construction worker” and Jonathan “enigmatic billionaire” in a downtown pub and subsequently the back alley. Oh yes, de-light-ful

Jonathan sees something in Bran that Bran so obviously does not recognise in himself, however he agrees to meet Jonathan the next evening and that was where the whole essence of the story unfolds. Jonathan offers Bran three million dollars in exchange for six months of Bran’s life to “open his eyes to a whole new World”

Bran has not had an easy life and is trying to turn this around and make things better for him; hence the three million dollars would for sure help him to buy the company he currently works for. He doesn’t, however, know what he is letting himself in for in the exchange. He has no idea what being a “submissive” truly entails.

Jonathan feels comfortable in what he is – a dominant, but after a disastrous marriage he now only relies on six month contracts to give him what he desires. In the past he and the other parties have entered the contracts with eyes wide open but with Bran this does not go to plan.

This is an extremely dark and powerful read and at times uncomfortable. The emotions it pulled out from me – from the “WTF is going on?” to the “Jesus!” to the “weeping like a wuss”, it was a wonderful insight and yes it pushed my boundaries. Result! Onwards to the next part. Yay!
