The opening scene for this book was an absolutely jaw
dropper, it was hard core, intense and totally blew me away.
Erica, after surviving an horrific experience, escapes from
her nightmare using a new alias with her saviour, Leo. Both can never go back
to who they were and have to keep looking over their shoulders wherever they
end up. Never able to settle and with a new life of different cities and ever
changing identities.
That is until they arrive in Ohio and ‘Riley’ comes face to
face with her new neighbour Adam. Can he be trusted and is he who he says he is
or is he one of ‘them’?
Slate is at the peak of his career as heavyweight champion
of the World and after every big fight he takes a month out of the spotlight
and returns to the place he is from, Ohio. He keeps a low profile and gives
himself downtime until it’s time to return to the merry-go-round that is his
celebrity lifestyle. But then he meets Riley and at first this timid and scared
woman just freaks him out with her behaviour but after he gets to know her
better he feels a need to protect and own her.
Riley is afraid to let him get close to her but after Dave/Leo pushes her to just
let it be what she feels for Adam/Slate, she takes a chance that even though she
knows could put them in danger she cannot fight what she feels for him.
The reader is not given an insight as to why Erica/Riley and
Dave/Leo are on the run and what the impacts of that night have instigated but
the danger is felt. For Erica to become involved with Slate could put them in
the spotlight and give an open invitation to those seeking out both her and
Leo.
Even with the dark, danger filled suspense background story,
it was easy to fall for the developing relationship of Slate and Erica. You can
feel the tentative and emotive scenes between the pair, with Erica, for once
being happy to take a chance and Slate fighting for her to put her whole trust
in him.
I also liked that the author made the actions of Erica
believable and not for her to dive straight into a sex filled, passion-fest
with Slate. After the horrific experience she had gone through just three years
previously, it was completely understandable for her to be timid, scared and anxious
with intimacy. It was beautiful to read how Slate slowly let
her take it at her own pace and was understandable to her needs. That’s not to
say there was no sex because there was (eventually) and it was a wholly sensual
and erotic experience.
Just when you thought everything was finally coming to a
solution so that Erica and Slate could find their HEA, an explosive scene was
thrown right in near the end that had my heart in my mouth. I, like Slate was
totally thrown and did not see that one coming. After reading it I did think it
didn’t sit right with the secret plot, but none the less it was riveting
reading.
I really liked this storyline, it was gripping, emotive and held
some highly erotic interaction between the two main characters. A definite page
turner and a recommended read from me. Four stars.
