No matter how unbreakable he may seem, every man has a weakness.
A year ago, my home became a bloodstained crime scene. That night marked the beginning of my hell—the same night I was tortured by my enemies and tossed into an underground prison to die.
They failed. I survived.
Now that I’m free, only one motive burns in my soul: revenge.
Lucky for me, they think Jase Hawkins is dead. Maybe I am. I’ve got nothing but a cold, merciless rage, and Black Betty, the sharp steel blade that never leaves my side.
Then she drifts into my life.
Lucia wants answers—so much so, she’s willing to fall into the darkness where my enemies lie in wait, to kill her for what she knows.
Or to take her for the depraved fantasies her body alone can rouse in a man’s mind.
Me? I want her for the fire in her touch that feeds my addiction, forces me to feel what has become numb, but my appetite for bloodshed runs deeper than flesh.
For my own sanity, I’ve vowed to stay away from her. Because she’s my only weakness, an obsession that leaves me craving more—one that could make even the most steadfast plan backfire.
Review
This is the second book in the Vigilante series but can
easily be read as a standalone. Having been enthralled with the first book
Ricochet I was eager to see if this would be the same intensity.
Jase Hawkins has lived a desolate life with the only slice
of happy being that of his brother and grandmother. When they are both murdered
he is intent on the savage revenge of those involved. After a period of being
held captured he is surprised when his capturer lets him leave but with one
small task – murder. jase is up for the challenge, especially as it will aid him to exact that revenge he is desparate for.
Lucy has always sought for the edgy life and her unique photography
leads her to some dark places. It is in one of these dark places that she
records something horrific and in her dash to get away from the perpetrators
she leaves some damning evidence behind of her identity.
Through the twists and turns of the underworld of Detroit, Jase and Lucy are brought together when he takes her from a scene of near
death. As their proximity sets off a dark and twisted lust they come to realise
they have met before, long ago in the past. It is that glimmer of a beacon of
light from their first meeting as kids that has kept them both hanging onto
that feeling of hope, that things could get better.
This was a very involved plot line and at times I had to
stop and regroup to try and fathom what was going on and how this impacted on
the dynamic duo. There was plenty of gritty and graphic violence and death that
only lovers of dark suspense romance could gel with. As for me the grittier and
darker it is then all the better but I would say this was not too extreme. I
also felt this was more of a new adult dark romance as Jase didn’t come across
as the menacing mega alpha like Nick did in the last book. However it was an engaging and
enticing read with lots of passion, angst and hardcore sex thrown in to give
the intensity of the connection between Jase and Lucy all the more deep.
Overall I did enjoy and would rate this a four star. Looking
forward to the next in the series.
