Series: Lies and Truth #1
Author: Rachael Duncan
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: 5 February 2015

Who needs love when you have money?

It used to be enough, but now it’s not.

Not since he walked into my life and made me question everything.

Now I want more, but I know that’s impossible.

Things aren’t always as they seem.

My true self is hidden, and that works for me.

Or it did.

I hide in a bed of deception to disguise myself, and I’m good at it.

Or I was.

I’m Elizabeth Fitzgerald.

I’m a Senator’s wife.

And I hate my life.

After a few minutes, he says, “I know there’s more to you, Elizabeth. I can tell there’s someone hidden inside you dying to come out. I can see it in the fake smile you show everyone, including Cal, the way you frown when you’re alone in your thoughts, and the sadness that’s lurking in your eyes. Why are you hiding?”

God help me, but there’s something in the way he speaks to me that makes me want to lay all my secrets and sins bare. He’s soft and gentle, but most importantly, I believe he wants to know more about me. He’s not asking to gain leverage or use it to his advantage, he’s genuinely concerned. And it makes me want to tell him everything. But the rational side of my brain tells me not to, so I reel in this strange impulse to divulge my secrets to a man I hardly know.

This is the first book in a two book series – Lies and Truth. There is a shock ending which will be resolved in the second book due out in June 2015.

Elizabeth has grown up with the mantra of marrying for money from her mother who, although loved and adored her father, she did not want a life of struggle for her daughter. As such Elizabeth is now a senator’s wife, surviving in a loveless marriage but keeping up the façade of being a dutiful and devoted wife to her husband, Cal Fitzgerald.

Hot on the presidency campaign trail, Cal has hired bodyguard Alex, to cover his wife. Little did he realise how deep that coverage would lead to.

Alex and Elizabeth find themselves fighting an irresistible pull towards each other. Elizabeth feels she can finally be her true self in his company and Alex finds the need to protect this woman in more ways than that of a bodyguard.

In some ways I really routed for Elizabeth with what she had to put up with, with her devious and downright deplorable husband. But in others I kept wishing she would find some strength and live her life for her that is until it is revealed why she needs to remain the dutiful wife. She was severely trapped in between the need to be free and herself and the need to support and protect others.

There was a little bit of steam and sauce between Alex and Elizabeth and it was a close line on the cheating field but when the reader is given the proof of Cal’s indiscretions, it was kind of acceptable for what went off. He was an absolute monster, I hated him!

The ending was a shocker and not even a HFN to soothe the poke in the eye that left me reeling with. Luckily we don’t have too long to wait for the conclusion. A well written and engaging read. Four stars.
