Title: Love's Design
Series: Bodyguards, Inc. #5
Author: R.J. Scott
Genre: M/M Contemporary Romance
Can Christmas be the time when Kirby finally stops running and allows himself to fall in love with the man who saves his life?
CIA Agent Stefan Mortimer is cooling his heels in the UK until he can go home. Taking on easy assignments with Bodyguards Inc. seems like a good solution to keep him sane. He's used to life throwing him curveballs, and it’s just another day at the office when he rescues Kirby Devlin and his niece and nephew. Now he has to keep Kirby and the kids alive and stay professional.
Kirby Devlin has one priority; keeping his small family safe. On the run, and facing danger at every turn, Kirby finally runs out of places to hide on a snowy December day at an Edinburgh train station. Stefan comes to the rescue, saves him and the children. Is it possible that Kirby finally has someone to trust?
Now, if only it would be as easy for Kirby to trust Stefan with his heart.
"...Kirby was on the run with little Andy and Louise, having seen their father stabbed and left for dead. An unexpected attack at the train station left Kirby in a bloody mess and Stefan coming to the rescue. ... Love’s Design was a great addition to the Bodyguard, Inc. series, with a magical Christmas theme..."
Stefan Mortimer appeared in the last book and is a CIA agent and a friend of Kyle. Being held back in the UK due to some investigations still going on in the States to make sure it was OK for him to return, he has been picking up some jobs for Kyle. Whilst completing a bodyguard job up in Edinburgh he comes across a man being beaten up in the train station toilets and steps into help.
Kirby Devlin is on the run to protect his nephew and niece but coming across the perpetrators who attack him, puts a spanner in the works until the big guy dives in and beats the three men off him. From then on Stefan takes on the task of keeping Kirby and the children safe and the best place to be is at the Bodyguards Inc. mansion down south.
It takes a lot for Kirby to trust anyone. After being kicked out of the family home at sixteen and being on his own ever since, he has learnt to live life on the side-lines. So when Stefan starts making plans involving the police, this puts Kirby’s back up and leaves Stefan wondering why Kirby is so against involving the authorities.
Little by little the background to the story evolves and we find out what had happened to Kirby’s brother and Kirby starts to let Stefan in and makes steps towards placing his trust in him. To be honest most of the drama takes place off page and I would have loved to have had this intertwined with the Christmassy family setting to give a bit more depth to the storyline. However I did enjoy seeing Stefan lower his alpha and for Kirby to react to his attraction and let the romance happen that was inevitable between the pair.
I really love this series and this was a little different to the others as I didn’t feel that ‘connect’ between Stefan and Kirby from the start as I did with the other men. It was still an enjoyable read and I am looking forward to the next book in the series. Four stars.
