REVIEW
My rating = An emotion packed FIVE!
Read November 2013 and January 2014

WOW. Yes that word left my lips as I read the last word of this book. Yes it is a cliffhanger (which as I had the next book Torn sat waiting, it didn’t leave me hanging) but OMG what an amazing ending for this book. I absolutely did NOT see that coming but whoo hoo what a shocker. I loved it! So good I read it twice.

Dahlia London is having the time of her life at college with her bestie Aerie and her hot boyfriend Ben who she has been with since forever. He is her North, South…yes you get the picture? He was her everything. This love was for eternity. So there I was getting all loved in with the story then…BOOM ...the scene stealer happened.

Aerie drags Dahlia to see an upcoming new band at the local bar and this was to be a major event of a night for Dahlia that years later would have prominence for her. She locks eyes with the singer, River and they instantly feel the intensity of their connection. Now whether it was fate or the stars not being aligned, she doesn’t hang around when he needs to get back on stage but that night would be forever embedded in her psyche.

Fast forward five years and Dahlia has gone through the ultimate tragedy that anybody could endure that has seen her in the depths of despair and grief. This part of the book had me in pieces, I was in bits and wailing like a banshee. However I will point out that Ms Karr did this brilliantly, she was spot on with the descriptive emotion that Dahlia would be going though. So heart breaking. But then in the aftermath it had the reader questioning what was hiding within the plot? Was there more to this that meets the eye? But then the next chapter pulls you out of your wailing and WTFery and you find yourself rooting for Dahlia to let go.

After years of mourning she eventually starts to see she needs to move on if she is to ever recover which brings her to kick starting her career in the media and is sent to do an interview. An interview with a nearly famous rock star on the brink of global success – River.  Yes River Wilde from The Wilde Ones – the little known at the time band from the bar where she first met River all those years ago.

OK now I think that is enough spoilerism because let me tell you dear reader you are in for a treat. River Wilde is the bomb! He is one stupendous and absolutely gorgeous rock star with a heart. What I love about River is that he isn’t a sleep around, drug taking ho. Oh no. He’s lush and even better he has never forgotten Dahlia and once they both acknowledge they still remember that night? Well a beautiful love story evolves. With a lot of hot sex. Yeah!

Then as we are all getting gooey eyed and sighing into the kindle, Ms Karr gives us one hell of a curve ball that delivers whiplash! OMG – What. The. Hell? Brilliant, brilliant. Classy suspenderama time.

So did I like this book? No. I LOVED this book! There was no hanging around either as I was straight onto Torn to find out what the heck was going to happen next. An amazing 5 stars read.

REVIEW
My Rating = A sensational FIVE!
*ARC provided by the author in exchange for my honest review

This is book two in the Connections series and carries on immediately after the first book Connected which left us with that amazingly brilliant cliffhanger. I was therefore definitely eager to dive into Torn and find out what the clusterfook had happened.

So right when the reader is skipping with the unicorns and singing with the harps because Dahl and River are on the way to Vegas to get married, the phone rings. What happens next has you reading with your eyes peeled back and gulping for air. Oh my how can I survive this? But I did. Just. And I loved every blipping minute of it.

In Torn, the relationship of River and Dahl is tested to the ultimate and they both need to learn to trust and believe in each other, no matter what is thrown at them. Yes there are frustrations and, on River’s part, a lot of bottle smashing and glass table toppling but wowzers it’s an amazing read. I was on the edge of my seat just waiting for the Oh NO. No. Don’t do it. I kept on waiting for the bad to happen, the angst to build to epic proportions, but each and every time both River and Dahl kept surprising me. They worked things out! They talked! This is what I loved about this couple – they didn’t go out of their way to deliberately hurt each other. But there was a heck of a lot of disaster being thrashed at them.

I don’t want to give too much away, especially if you have not read Connected, but the cliffhanger and what was delivered there has a major impact on River and Dahl’s relationship. It was like we were in a perpetual spin cycle – as soon as one thing got sorted and cleared up another one would come around. It was both exhilarating and exhausting at the same time. But fantastic to read!

The relationship went from strength to strength and it was delightful to see it evolve to the beautiful ending. The erotic interludes continued to entice and engage with jaw dropping reactions! Sizzling and steamy

Xander (River’s brother) was also a revelation in this book. I started to look at him in a different light. Whereas in Connected I thought he was a bit of a prick, I actually started to fall for him in this book. He could just about become as sweet and sexy as his brother (can't wait for the next book – Mended coming in June)

I can’t actually say I didn’t like any of the secondary characters, I loved them all. But that is the power of Ms Karr’s writing, she just draws you in and delivers them to you in a way you can’t help but embrace them. Even Sadie, the silly woman – could she not see she did not have a chance. Nice bit of angst there though but again River didn’t revert to type like some other have in some rock star reads. Oh and on that note it was lovely to have other famous characters from other brilliant books make an appearance. Jake! Kellan! Rawr!

This book was so much more than I thought it was going to be and no it was not the angst driven love triangle which would have pained me to go through, no it was much, much more. An absolute diamond of a read and this series one of the best I have ever read. Another five stars for Ms Karr. I love you more!

Excerpts
Excerpt #1

The faces changed since the last time he was there, but the intention was still the same. It wasn’t a place to socialize or partake in camaraderie or drop in for a drink on your way home. It was meeting place for men interested in casual sex. The backroom served as a shanty for a quick encounter. You could stop in, get your rocks off and be on your way in half an hour. It was a smorgasbord of testosterone, a buffet of muscle and beefcake.

Men flocked around him as soon as he walked through the door. They always did. A guy once told him that it was the mixture of his rugged jaw and strong upper body, offset by the innocence of his big blue eyes that made him so attractive. The ladies always said it was his long blond hair and the guitar.

Excerpt #2

He played for Jessi. He always did, and it made her feel like a queen. He sat back on his knees, nodded at her and they shared a smile. The spotlight was on the two of them as he rattled of the intricate guitar solo, and she felt every pair of eyes gravitate toward her. Gooseflesh rose on her arms and the pitter-patter of her heart made her feel like a teenager. She needed to cover her lips with her fingertips in order to suppress the jubilant emotions that bubbled up inside her. Every time he played for her, it felt like the first time.

REVIEW
My Rating = A fabulous five stars!
Read November 2013 and Re-read January 2014

*ARC provided by the author/publishers in exchange for my honest review

Susan Mac Nicol has become one of my must read authors and this is because her books delve into the dark side of life and take the reader on an emotional tsunami of a read that I personally embrace.

Worth Keeping is one such read and touches in the delicate matter of child abuse and how the survivor copes with overcoming said abuse to try and achieve a semblance of normality in their life afterwards.

Nick Mathers has suffered an extreme abusive childhood with no one to protect him. In fact the one person he should expect to protect him was one of the instigators. How could he ever overcome such depth of despair?

The story picks up much later in Nick’s life where he is living a relatively sedate life as a Lighthouse guide on the Norfolk coast. He has his good days but then he has his dark days when his thoughts turn to how to stop the darkness. It was on such a night of contemplation that he found himself on the beach only to come across Owen Butler who has been washed ashore after he himself had turned his thoughts to drastic measures.

Owen had suffered a great loss and had found his days becoming unbearable, hence him being in the sea but for him it was also a turning point when he was washed ashore on Nick’s beach. The story then evolves of both coming to terms with their new found understanding of themselves and each other.

For me this was a meeting of two lost souls and even though at times I was frustrated at them both going from high elation and acceptance of each other to total rejection, it also was a joy to read of the relationship development. It was mainly Nick that instigated the break ups or arguments but after all he had been though then this was understandable and Owen was looking for someone to fill the void his loss had given.

However it’s not all darkness and woeful, there are some humorous parts especially involving Socks who is Nick’s pet monkey. This was a welcome surprise and an original addition. He was so darn cute with his pen knife (which came to be a major saviour later in the story!) The secondary characters also added to the blend of darkness and light, especially Justin (who needs his own story please Ms Mac Nicol?) From the smugglers who dared to bring ashore their booty onto Nick’s beach late at night which turned out to be sex toys ha-ha to the lovable Don, Nick’s adoptive father and his ultimate saviour. As in all good reads we need a villain we love to hate and in this book there is none so hateful than Nick’s ex-boyfriend (loosely termed) Brad. He was absolutely vile and hateful, he had me wanting to punch the kindle. What made it worse to read was to know that there are people out there in our World that exist who are just like him. But that’s also what I loved about this book – it took me from the greatest highs and joy to the lowest of despair and sadness.

It is not an easy read for sure but one I would not have missed for the world. I read this as soon as I received it and I have found myself reading snippets and then the full book again just last week. It had that much of an impact on me. I was also so pleased that the author is donating some of the proceeds to NSPCC (National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children) a major UK charity which I strongly support.

This is an absolute five star read for me and one I would wholeheartedly recommend. It delivers everything a good book should – the emotion of love and loss, the humour of life and some serious romance and hotness interlaced. A definite page turner and one not to miss.

GUEST POST - SUSAN MAC NICOL

Controversial subjects in books
I am always interested to read books that feature something unusual or not regularly found in Romance novels. I've read a few really good ones lately, dealing with the theme of hoarding, Stockholm Syndrome, bad skin conditions, amputees, and kidnap and abuse victims. I notice in all of these books that the authors tackle their subject matter with understanding and compassion and teach the reader a little more about what it means to have had a horrific event in your past, or have a phobia or illness.

Of course, I'm one of them, too. I've tackled the instance of female on male rape in my Starlight trilogy, homophobia in Stripped Bare, sexual abuse in Saving Alexander and child prostitution in Worth Keeping. I seem drawn to subjects that aren't perhaps the norm in Romance novels but I'm a realist. Out there are some damaged people in the world, and, of course, damaged people have the right to be in love, find romance and to be happy. So I create these characters that are flawed human beings, and then always create another one so that both can come together and form a whole.

I've noticed readers either take to this or they don't. A lot of my readers enjoy the angst that permeates the pages of my books, and the emotional upheaval as I wreak havoc. I've been told all my books should come with a warning 'Caution. Read this with a box of tissues to hand.' One blogger said I write 'dark and twisted stories' but with a hint of light at the end. Does this hinder my sales somewhat as people think they are perhaps too 'heavy' and can't stomach them? Perhaps. Will it stop me from writing them? That's an unequivocal, “No.”

First and foremost, writing about subjects I believe in, subjects that are perhaps hidden away in human psyches in the hope that, like an ostrich, if we ignore it and stick our heads in the sand, it will go away. Not so. If there's one thing I know, it's that human cruelty will continue to abide and all we can do is fight it every step of the way.

It's why I chose and my publisher agreed to donate some of the proceeds from Worth Keeping to the NSPCC- National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. They do a sterling job of helping abused, neglected and uprooted children here in the UK and need all the help they can get.

Currently, I’m working on a 'fictional biography' (my own term) with a man in the US who was a victim of same-sex child abuse when he was in the Boy Scouts. The abuser was his Scoutmaster, a man over twenty years older than him in a supposed position of trust and respect. This story is tough to listen to as he relates intimate details of his abuse and his subsequent life choices and the PTSD he suffered as a result. He's been in and out of prison over a period of seventeen years and seen the worst the US penal system has to offer. So this will be another book that is dark and twisted but one I hope will show the positivity and hope in turning a life around.

I believe in the self and in hope. I believe in the power of positive thoughts. It might not heal everything but we can give it a damn good try.

REVIEW:

My Rating = four stars

I did not know anything about this author or previous books so when I started reading I was pleasantly surprised. It was like a breath of fresh air. This was not a rainbows and unicorns skipping in the sunset type of read. It was an earthy with a reality kicking punch type of read that first had me raising my eyebrow then a satisfied grin was plastered on me for the remainder of my read.

It’s a story of a man – Morgan (yes that was confusing at first) who is going through a marriage break up which was sprung upon him when his wife of over twelve years suddenly upped and left him, taking their four year old daughter with her. After a period of self-pity and sense of loss, he picks himself up and begins a new avenue which leads him to instant status of published author – well self-published, which opens reams of possibilities which Morgan translates as opportunities for getting laid! His wife then requests they attend marriage guidance (for why, who knows) which leads to some funny incidents with the tasks they are asked to undertake by the marriage guidance counsellor.

I loved the scenes of Morgan with his daughter and found them quite touching but for the most part it was a humorous tale interwoven with touches of sadness. In short it covered real life with believable actions and believable characters.

The plot was original and unique and I enjoyed the ‘story within a story’ in this book. A highly enjoyable read which you really need to read to experience for yourself. You won’t regret it.
